Omri Casspi Basketball Camp is a Big Win for Cleveland Community

By Judy Horwitz

The Omri Casspi Basketball Camp, in partnership with Tamir Goodman, was a huge success with close to 80 kids in grades 1-8 from more than 20 area schools participating! The Sunday June 10th session at the Beachwood Middle School gym was the first of three mini camps that are taking place on consecutive Sundays in June.

Campers had a ball learning basketball fundamentals and life skills from a highly trained and experienced coaching staff that included Cavs small forward Omri Casspi and Tamir “The Jewish Jordan” Goodman, as well as former and current professional ball players, college coaches from the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Notre Dame College, college players, and longtime high school coaches.

In addition to working on overall basketball skills, Goodman says campers “focused on ball-handling with the proper dribbling technique because that is one of the corner stones of a well-rounded ball player.” Campers will focus on other fundamental skills like shooting and passing during the next two camp sessions. Although Casspi, standing at 6ft 9in, towered over even the tallest campers, the participants nevertheless had the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with him.

On the court Casspi went to each small group and provided campers with tips to improve their skills. After lunch he spoke to the captivated group about his personal basketball journey that led to his becoming the first Israeli born athlete to play in the NBA.  Campers also loved casually chatting with Casspi in between drills, during lunch, and as they patiently waited in line to have their camp T-shirts autographed.

The next two camp sessions will take place on June 17th and June 24th at the Fuchs Mizrachi School and Agnon School gyms in Beachwood.  In addition to sharpening their skills on the court, campers have some special guest appearances and exciting programs to look forward to including visits by one of Casspi’s Cavs teammates, the Cavs mascot, and a former Olympic athlete, as well as a fun program with Friendship Circle special needs children.

Casspi and Goodman would like to thank the camp sponsors for their support and the Cleveland community for embracing the camp. Much thanks also goes out to the Cavs for donating official Cavs jump ropes that each camper will receive!

It’s not too late to register a camper for the June 17th or 24th sessions!
