Goodman, 26, is a 6-foot, 3-inch guard who has played professionally both in
Israel and in the
United States.
Goodman, an Orthodox Jew, garnered national media attention while starring at the Talmudical Academy of Baltimore, where he was named the 25th best high school player in the country. He averaged 35.4 points his junior year (1998-1999) and 24.6 points his senior year (1999-2000), turning down a full scholarship at the University of Maryland, College Park due to scheduling conflicts.
After accepting a scholarship and playing two seasons at
Towson
University, Goodman was signed by Maccabi Tel Aviv to begin his professional career in
Israel.
Goodman played five seasons in
Israel for four different teams, reaching the Israeli Cup finals and Israeli Premier League Semifinals in 2003 with Maccabi Givat Shmuel.
“I look forward to helping the Haifa Heat as much as possible, both on and off the court. I share the same dream and vision as Mr. [Jeffrey] Rosen and I hope to spread that throughout
America and
Israel as much as possible,” said Goodman.
“We are excited to give Tamir another opportunity to play in
Israel. His signing is another piece of the puzzle in building a winning Maccabi Haifa Heat club,” said Coach Avi Ashkenazi.
In 2007, Goodman returned to the
United States to play for the Maryland Nighthawks of the newly formed Premier Basketball League (PBL), but was limited to only two games due to injuries.
“We are delighted to have Tamir join the team,” said owner Jeffrey Rosen.
“We expect that Tamir’s signing will bridge the relationship between the Israeli and American Jewish community as well as the Israeli and American basketball community.”
Goodman runs his own basketball camp throughout the
United States called the Tamir Goodman Athletic Leadership Basketball Camp (TGALBC). The purpose of the camp is to bring together talented Jewish and African American players from around the country to strengthen the relationship between the two communities as well as develop them as great basketball players.
He also founded Tamir Goodman Charities, a non-profit organization, which aids Israeli children affected by Katyusha rockets that have been launched at the city of
Sderot.
